Reading the chart
Pitch is inches of rise per 12" of run. The angle is what you set a speed square or saw to for the plumb cut; the seat angle is the level cut. The slope factor (√(1 + (pitch/12)²)) turns plan area into roof area and run into rafter length: rafter length = run × slope factor, before the ridge and overhang adjustments.
Hips and valleys run diagonally at 17" of run per 12" of common run, so their factor is √(2 + (pitch/12)²) per foot of common run. Need a pitch that isn't on the chart, or a pitch from a measured rise and run? Use the calculator above.
FAQ
What angle is a 4/12 roof pitch?
18.43°, a 33.3% slope. Its slope factor is 1.054.
What angle is a 12/12 roof pitch?
45°, a 100% slope: it rises a foot for every foot of run. Each foot of run takes 17" of common rafter.
